من المعلوم أن الحاسب الآلي دخل في معظم مجالات الحياة، والمعرفة، والجغرافيا من العلوم التي قطعت شوطاً كبيراً في التطور باعتمادها على الأسلوب الكمي في تحليل ومعالجة البيانات الجغرافية ... فقد أدى التطوّر الهائل في الحاسوب الآلي والبرامج المرتبطة به إلى ظهور ما يسمى بنظم المعلومات الجغرافية "GIS" والتي بدأت على شكل برامج لإعداد وتصميم الخرائط بمساعدة الحاسب الآلي، تطورت بدورها إلى برامج نظم المعلومات التي لها القدرة على ربط البيانات الجغرافية، ببياناتها الوصفية، للحصول على كثير من التحليلات المكانية والتي استعادت منها الجغرافيا كثيراً.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تمكين دارسي الجغرافيا من الإلمام بمهارات استخدام الحاسوب في تحرير النصوص، والتحليل الإحصائي واساليب عرض البيانات، إضافة إلى تصميم وإعداد الخرائط باستخدام نظم المعلومات الجغرافية.
يشتمل الكتاب على خمسة فصول، الفصل الأول، يتناول أجيال الحاسب الآلي ومكوّناته المختلفة، حيث يتطرق إلى مراحل تطور الحاسب ومكوناته سواء الأجهزة الصلبة أو البرامج التي تتحكم في سير الحاسب. أما الفصل الثاني فيتناول نظم التشغيل وأنواعها، مع التعرّف على نظام التشغيل ويندوز. ويتناول الفصل الثالث، نظام التحليل الإحصائي للعلوم الإجتماعية SPSS وتطبيقاته المختلفة في الجغرافيا، من حيث تحليل البيانات وطرق عرضها بواسطة الأشكال البيانية. بينما يتناول الفصل الرابع طرق تصميم وإعداد الخرائط بمساعدة الحاسب من خلال التطبيق على برامج نظم المعلومات الجغرافية. ويتناول الفصل الخامس أسس التعامل مع برنامج محرر النصوص، من حيث إنشاء الوثيقة وتحريرها وتنسيقها وتخزينها وطباعتها.
