شهدت دراسة علم المعنى بشقيه السمانتيكي (semantics) والبراجماتيكي (pragmatics) تقدماً ملموساً في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، ويستدل على ذلك من الأبحاث العلمية المنشورة في الدوريات اللسانية والفلسفية، ومن الكتب المنشورة المتخصصة في هذا المجال، ناهيك عن الأبحاث غير المنشورة في رسائل الماجستير والدكتوراه في الجامعات الأوروبية والأمريكية. إلا أن علم المعنى في اللغة العربية لم يحظ بالعناية التي يستحقها بل ظلت آفاقه في حدود ما قدمه البلاغيون وبخاصة العلَامة العملاق عبد القاهر الجرجاني في القرن الخامس الهجري من دراسات في علوم البلاغة الثلاثة: المعاني، والبيان، والبديع. هذا ولكن بعض المتخصصين في اللغة العربية في العالم العربي من أمثال إبراهيم أنيس، ورمضان عبد التواب، وأحمد مختار عمر، وتمام حسَان، وإبراهيم السامراني، وجرجي زيدان، ومحمد المبارك، وعبد العزيز عتيق، ونهاد الموسى، وآخرين لا يتسع المقام لذكر فضلهم، قدَموا دراسات حديثة في علم اللغة تطرقت إلى موضوعات في اللغة العربية وأبنيتها الصوتية والصرفية والنحوية ومكانتها الحضاريَة والإنسانيَة مستفيدين من معطيات علم اللغة في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين ومؤكدين بذلك أهمية اللغة العربية وموقعها على الخريطة اللغوية في العالم ودورها في دفع نظريات علم اللغة وآفاقها إلى الأمام.
وبناء على ذلك، قام المؤلف برفد المكتبة العربية بكتاب في هذا المجال يتضمن نتائج أبحاثه ودراساته الأكاديمية منذ أواخر الستينات إلى الآن، حيث وزع صفحات كتابه على خمسة فصول وفق ما يلي: الفصل الأول: لدلالة، الفصل الثاني: علاقة الدلالة بين كلمة وأخرى، الفصل الثالث: مكانة المعنى في الدراسات اللغوية، الفصل الرابع: العلاقة بين المبنى والمعنى، الفصل الخامس: البراجماتية اللغوية.
