يهدف علم هندسة التحويلات أساساً إلى دراسة تأثير الدالة أو التطبيق أو الراسم على مجموعة النقاط التي يتألف منها شكل ما وما ينجم عن ذلك من تحويله لشكل آخر مُطابق أو مُشابه أو مُغاير للشكل الأصلي مع دراسة خصائص الصورة الناتجة من جراء هذا التطبيق وعلاقتها بالشكل الأصلي وطبيعة التطبيق المُؤثر عليه.
ولقد ظهرت الحاجة المُلحة لهذا النوع من الدراسة الحركية للأشكال الهندسية والتي تختلف في مفهومها عن الأسلوب التقليدي المعتمد على المعالجة الإقليدية الساكنة للأشكال الهندسية بعد الثورة العلمية الهائلة في العصر الحديث والتي أظهرت القصور والخلل في دراسة الهندسة بوضعها الجامد الإقليدي الذي ساد طرق تدريس الهندسة طوال القرون الماضية، مما دفع الدول المتقدمة إلى إدخال مادة هندسة التحويلات حديثاً على المناهج التدريسية.
وهذا الكتاب هو مقدمة في علم هندسة التحويلات يعين القارئ العربي على تتبع موضوعاته والتعرف على المقومات الأساسية لمادته، وهو كتاب تدريسي يصلح لطلاب المراحل الأولى في كليات المعلمين والتربية والعلوم والهندسة.
وقد راعى المؤلف أن يكون أسلوبه سهلاً ولغته الرياضية مبسطة إلى حدٍ كبير بحيث تتطلب معرفة رياضية من مستوى الدراسة الثانوية، وعمل على الإكثار من الأمثلة التوضيحية والإسهاب في طرق حلها بشقيها البياني والتحليلي مما يُسهل على القارئ الإلمام الكافي بتفاصيل مادة الكتاب دون عناء، ونظراً للتطبيقات الهندسية والعملية الجمة لهندسة التحويلات فقد تذيييل الأبواب الرئيسة للكتاب بأمثلة تطبيقية متنوعة تعتمد على خصائص كل باب والمهارة في تطبيق أفكاره لحل الكثير من المسائل الإنشائية الهندسية والفيزيائية.
