حفل الخطاب النقدي العربي في السنوات الأخيرة في القرن العشرين بكثير من المناهج والتيارات الغربية الوافدة نتيجة لإنفتاحه على الثقافات العالمية المختلفة، ولم تكن المعرفة الإنسانية حكراً على حضارة دون أخرى، وظاهرة التلاقي والتلاقح ضرورة حتمية للثقافة العربية والإسلامية بشرط عدم الإرتماء كليةً في أحضان تلك الثقافات وتبقى إستقلالية الثقافة والحضارة سعة للأمة التي تحترم ذاتها.
ومن هذا التيارات الوافدة (الأسلوبية) التي دخلت الساحة الأدبية العربية، حيث بدأت الترجمات من ثقافات عالمية متعددة، فحاول الكتاب استيعاب مضمونها، وتمثل مقولاتها، وصاروا يستثمرونها في التعامل مع النص الأدبي.
إذن (الأسلوبية) مصطلح وعلم وافد معاصر، ولهذا بشر بها الباحثون بوصفها ظاهرة جديدة تحتضن كثيراً من التناقضات التي انطوت عليها بعض المناهج النقدية التي انحازت إمّا في الأطر الخارجية للنصّ، أو أنها تعبّدت في محرابه، وأنكرت ما سواه.
وقد تعددت تعريفاتها ومناهجها، وكتب عنها الباحثون، فمنهم من يتحدث عنها في الخطاب الغربي فقط، ومنهم من انشغل بجذورها في التراث العربي، ومنهم من اقتصر في كتاباته على التطبيقات على النصوص العربية، ومنهم من تحدث عنها من منظور الخطاب العربي فقط.
