عجلة آشوكا هي عجلة الحياة وعلامات الوجود ثلاث: الألم، وعدم الثبات والدوام، واللا نفس، وهذه معالم ما سمَّاه البوذيون السمسارا أو الدورات اللانهائية للولادة والتغير والموت ثم الولادة من جديد، وتظهر في بشر وحيوانات... وفي مركز هذه العجلة رموز للجشع والكراهية والجهل، وفي الخارج توجد الحلقات الإثنتا عشرة المتصلة.
وهذا يبين كيف أن كل شيء يقود إلى شيء آخر أو أن كل حالة تظهر نتيجة لحالة سابقة، ثم تتحول السمسارا إلى النيرفانا، وتتغير الدورة اللانهائية للألم إلى سعادة.
البوذية فلسفة وضعيّة انتحلت الصبغة الدينية، وقد ظهرت معالمها التامة في الهند في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد، وكانت في البداية تناهض الهندوسية وتتجه إلى العناية بالإنسان، وفيها دعوة إلى التصوف والخشونة ونبذ الترف والمناداة بالمحبة والتسامح وفعل الخير.
ومنذ نشأتها رفضت البوذية كل الأشكال التأليهية الكثيرة التي زعم بها الهندوس، فأصبحت ديانة بدون إله، وبعد موت مؤسسها تحولت إلى معتقدات باطلة، ذات طابع وثني، وقد غالى أتباعها في مؤسسها حتى ألَّهوه، وصاروا يعبدونه، ويعبدون البوذات الذين خلفوه.
وتدريجياً انتشرت في أنحاء آسيا، التيبت فسريلانكا، ثم إلى الصين، منغوليا، كوريا، فاليابان، وتفرعت عنها فرق عديدة.
