فاللامِيَّة من البوذية، وقد تفرعت عنها، وتمارس في التيبت الصينية، وفي منغوليا والهند وماليزيا ونيبال وتايوان وغيرها، وتسمى البوذية التيبتية، وتنسب إلى رهبان البوذيين اللامات الذين يعلّمون البوذية، ويتزعمون قيادتها، يشددون على التأمل والطقوس السرية، والعقيدة الباطنية... دالاي تعني باللغة المغولية المحيط، ودلاي لاما بالنسبة للبوذيين هو الرحمة، وهو يمثل تقمص الإله وتمثله على رأس الطائفة...
وتعتبر هذه الفرقة، إنحرافاً وخروجاً عن البوذية، ويعتقدون بأن حياة بوذا قد انتقلت إلى اللاما... ويعتقدون أن روح بوذا يمكن أن تتقمص في أي كائن حتى في الحيوان والنبات، وأن كل الأشياء في الوجود تحمل روح بوذا... يعبدون الأرواح، ولديهم طقوس غريبة، فيقطعون جثة الأموات ويشوونها ويقدمونها للطيور الجارحة، لكي تحمل أرواح موتاهم إلى السماء.
