الزجاجي صاحب الكتاب هو أحد الأئمة الذين أسسوا المدرسة البغدادية في النحو وأقاموا صرحها الشامخ، وقد نال هذا الكتاب (الجمل) شهرة مدوية في العصور الوسطى لدقة تنظيمه وتبويبه وحسن صياغته ويسر أسلوبه، مما جعل النحاة يعكفون قروناً متطاولة على تدريسه لطلابهم في مشارق العالم العربي ومغاربه، وقد ظل المصريون والشاميون منذ ظهوره في القرن الرابع الهجري حتى ظهور ابن مالك في القرن السابع وابن هشام في القرن الثامن لا يعنون بشرح كتاب نحوي وتفسيره كما يعنون به، وما يزال المغرب العربي حتى اليوم يعتمد عليه في تعليم الناشئة النحو، وهيأ ذلك كله لأن تتكاثر شروحه من قديم حتى لتبلغ أكثر من مائة وعشرين شرحاً، وفي مقدمة هذه الشروح التي طالما تدارسها النحاة وطلابهم (شرقاً وغرباً)، شرح ابن هشام الذي جاء في هذا الكتاب والذي عنى به الدكتور "علي محسن عيسى مال الله" محققاً مضمون النص ليمكن الباحثين منه، وقد استطاع بعمله هذا أن يستوفي لتحقيق شرح الجمل لابن هشام شرائعه العلمية، واضعاً بين يدي هذا التحقيق العلمي الخصب تمهيداً عرض فيه حياة الزجاجي، وحياة ابن هشام، وآثارهما العلمية وتلا ذلك بفصلين، تحدث في أولهما عن كتاب الجمل وشرحه. وختمه بمناقشة وتحليل لمادته.
أما الفصل الثاني فأفرده لمنهج ابن هشام في شرح الجمل والخطوات التي اتبعها في هذا الشرح. ثم تكلم عن السماع، وأنواع الشواهد، والآيات القرآنية والشعر والأحاديث النبوية، والقياس والتحليل ووجوه الإعراب، والمصطلح النحوي عند ابن هشام في شرحه. وبعد ذلك حاول عمل مقارنة بين شرح ابن هشام وشروح أخرى وذلك ليعطي صورة واضحة لشرح ابن هشام، هذا ما احتواه القسم الأول من هذه الرسالة. أما القسم الثاني فخصصه للتحقيق، وفيه شرح المحقق جمل الزجاجي لابن هشام، موثقاً نسبة هذا الشرح له، وبعد ذلك إشارة إلى منهج الباحث في التحقيق، ثم أوجز البحث كله بخاتمة بيّن فيها النتائج التي توصل إليها الباحث.
