محطات في رحاب اللغة العربية يقف عندها الدكتور إبراهيم السمرائي بعد صحبته لأعوام طوال للمعجم العربي القديم مصاحبة الصديق، وقد تثنى له من خلال هذه الصحبة الطويلة الوقوف على حقيقة هامة وهي أن من خصائص العربية ما يشير إلى سعتها وشجاعتها، فكان له أن جمع طائفة من وقفاته فيه، في هذا الكتاب يجيل خلالها النظر في الماضي والحاضر ليقدم شيئا مهماً للدارسين لفائدة هذه اللغة العامرة، جاءت تلك المحطات ضمن بابين وفصول، الباب الأول شمل فصولاً ستة، كان الفصل الأول والثاني بمثابة مسيرة في رحاب العربية في ظلال المعجم القديم قدم الباحث من خلالها عرضاً لغوياً تاريخياً لألفاظ كثيرة رتبت على حروف المعجم، فيهما من الفوائد اللغوية النقدية التي ينبغي أن تتوفر في المعجم التاريخي. وقدم في الفصل الثالث عرضاً لمواد البداوة الأولى ثم تحولها إلى مواد حضارية خدمت العلم المتخصص. ودار الفصل الرابع حول أبنية عربية مشتقة صرفت في العربية إلى فوائد دلالية. وقدم المؤلف في الفصل الخامس تحقيقاً لغوياً في الصيغ والاستعمالات الذي اشتمل على فوائد لغوية تاريخية إلى جوانب أخرى جّدت في العربية وشاعت. وخصص الفصل السادس لموضوع سطوة الشاعر ولغة الشعر، وأما الباب الثاني فقد حوى فصولاً خمسة والأول منها جاء لمقدمة في دراسة اللهجات، وعرض في الفصل الثاني لمعجم العامي الفصيح مادته ألفاظ عامية متداولة في عصرنا، وقد كانت ألفاظاً فصيحة،مرتبة على حروف المعجم، وتحدث في الفصل الثالث عن العامية في العراق، ونبه في الرابع على قصور لغة الشعر العربي المعاصر، وعدم استطاعة أصحاب هذا الشعر أن يدركوا في شعرهم ما يشيرون إليه من الأعراب عن الفن الحديث المعاصر الذي يكتسب قوته من الفكر الحديث،. ثم تحدث في الفصل الخامس عن الجديد في اللغة، وعن المعجم العربي الحديث، وختم كتابه بخاتمة أشار فيها إلى قدرة العربية على استيعاب الجديد معتمدة على طاقتها في استيعابها للمواد القديمة، بدوية وحضرية.
