من الأبحاث المهمة التي طرحت في الفكر الإسلامي؛ هو مفهوم العقل والجهل، وافتتحوا كتب الحديث والرواية بالروايات التي تعرف لنا العقل ومفهومه وحدوده ومداركه وماهيته وصفاته، والجهل الكلي كذلك. ولعل السبب في ذلك أم معرفة الحديث والرواية الواردة عن المعصوم عليه السلام، تحتاج إلى عقل وعلم ومعرفة، لا الجهل والظلمة. فلهذا أتى العلماء والحكماء والفلاسفة وانكبوا على تعريفها تعريفا وافيا، وانصب جهدهم بتقديم العقل ضمن المسار الإلهي، الذي يوافق مذهب السماء وعالم الملك والملكوت. والجهل هو المتعلق بجذور الأرض السفلي، الذي يحذو حذو الأبالسة والمردة والشياطين الذين هم من جنده وأعوانه. ومن هنا نخلص لنتيجة أو هي منذ ألقى الله تعالى أول خطاب تكليفي لكل أبعاد هذا الوجود, والسجود لآدم عليه السلام، وهو أول بداية الصراع، هو قوله تعالى:" فسجدوا إلا إبليس أبى واستكبر وكان من الكافرين"، وكان هذا أول ظهور أثار الصراع بين مبدأ الطاعة والنور، والسير إلى قمم الصعود الإلهي، وبين الصراع والتمرد على الأوامر الإلهية، فكانت ظلمة الجهل الكلي تصارع نور العقل الكلي من ذاك العالم. وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا جاء خصيصاً ليجلو ظلمة الليل ورماد الجهل، وهو يحتوي على دراسة تهدف إلى بيان معاني العقل الكلي والجهل الكلي وآثارهما وصراعهما منذ بدأ الله الخليقة إلى عصر فاتحي النبوة والولاية المطلقتين عليهما السلام.
