لقد ذكر ابنُ النديم، في كتاب الفِهْرِسْت مقالةً "في الآجال" لحُنين بن إسحق، وذكرها من بعده أصحاب "كُتُب الرجال" كلّهم؛ إلاّ أنّا لم نجد أيّ مخطوطٍ نقل لنا هذا النصّ.
بالحقيقة، قد كان الأب بولس سباط أشار إلى مخطوطٍ للمقالة مِلْك ورثة الدكتور جبرائيل حكيم بحلب، وكان قد رأى المخطوط في العشرينيَّات، أمّا اليوم، فقد ضاعت هذه المكتبة، وضاعت معها المقالة، فاعتُبر نصُّنا مفقوداً.
وقد أسعدنا الحظّ، فاكتشفنا المقالة في أطواء موسوعة دينيّة للعالم القبطيّ مؤتمن الدولة إبراهيم أبي إسحاق، المعروف بابن العسّال، الذي وضع كتاب مجموع أصول الدين، ومسموع محصول اليقين نحو سنة 1267- 1268م.
فعزمنا على نشرها، وجمعنا المخطوطات مختارين منها خمساً محفوظةً اليوم في القاهرة وباريس ولندن وبرمنغهام، وحقّقناها بدقّة، مُشيرين إلى كلّ الروايات، وإن كانت إملائيّة فقط، وقبل أن نشرع في تحقيق النصّ، نقدّم له ببحثٍ وجيز عن حياة حُنين ثمّ عن مؤلفاته.
