سعى محمّد الشّاوش في هذه الدّراسة إلى البحث عمّا في التراث النحوي العربي من أصول وقوانين كليّة تؤسس لتحليل نصّ الخطاب وتلتقي بأصول ما يسعى اليوم "نحو النّص"، وأقام بذلك الدليل على أنّ في النّظرية النّحوية العربيّة أسساً وقواعد يتوفّر فيها من الشّمول والملاءمة ما يجعلها كاشفة عن الخصائص التي تميّز بها الأبنية النّصيّة الخطابيّة والخصائص التي تشترك فيها مع سائر الظواهر اللغوية.
واحتجَ لأطروحة أراد أن يسهم بها في تجاوز ما وجده مبحث "نحو النّص" في الدّراسات الحديثة من فصل بين لسانيات اللغة ولسانيات الخطاب، وهو فصل أقام بين النّظام والإستعمال حاجزاً تعذّر معه الإنتقال من الأوّل إلى الثاني ونزّل النّصَّ في مجال الإجراء، فحال ذلك دون الظّفر بقوانين عامّة تجعل لنصّ الخطاب منزلة في النّظام.
وفي هذه الدّراسة إعتزاز بتراثنا اللغويّ لا زائف ولا أجوف، إنه إعتزاز من اجتهد في تدبّر الفكر اللسانيّ الحديث وسعى في الآن نفسه إلى النّفاذ إلى البناء الذي أقامه النّحاة العرب ليحدّث من داخله عمّا انتهى إليه وهو يفكّر في أصول المعمار، وهي أصول كانت - وما تزال - من أهمّ ما أغنى به العرب الفكر اللغويّ الإنساني.
