إن العقيدة الإسلامية هي عماد الدين وجوهره وأساسه الذي يبنى عليه ومن العلوم أن علم أصول الدين هو أشرف العلوم، إذ أن شرف العلم بشرف المعلوم، وحاجة العباد إليه فوق كل حاجة وضرورتهم إليه فوق كل ضرورة لأنه لا حياة للقلوب ولا نعيم ولا طمأنينة إلا بأن تعرف ربها ومعبودها وفاطرها بأسمائه وصفاته وأفعاله.
ولقد كان باب التكفير وعدم التكفير مثار جدل عنيف وقع بين الفرق الإسلامية منذ صدر الإسلام وضلت فيه بعض الفرق كالخوارج الذين يكفرون بكل ذنب والمرجئة الذين قالوا: "لا يضر مع الإيمان ذنب كما لا ينفع مع الكفر طاعة" ولا يزال الرمي بالتكفير قائماً لدى بعض الفرق المعاصرة والجدل محتدم حول هذه المسألة.
لذلك، كان هذا الباب من أعظم الأبواب في مباحث أصول الدين وأكثرها خطورة ودقة، ولا يتمكن من فهم مسائله ومعرفة ضوابطه وشروطه على الوجه الصحيح إلا الأكابر من أهل العلم الواسع والفهم الثاقب، وقد بحث في هذا المجال الخطير كثير من العلماء الأجلاء، وبينوا منهج أهل السنة ووسطيتهم في هذا الموضوع، وردوا على الفرق المنحرفة فيه المفْرِطون والمفَرِّطون منهم على حد سواء.
وقد خص بعض العلماء مسائل التكفير وأول عالم من أهل السنة أفرد هذا الموضوع بتأليف مستقل، هو العلامة بدر الرشيد في كتابه "ألفاظ الكفر" وأول شرح عليه وأهمه هو / شرح العلامة علي القاري الذي بين أيدينا ولأهمية هذا الكتاب وموضوعه وسبق مؤلفه فيه جعله الدكتور الطيب الشنقيطي موضوع رسالته لنيل درجة الدكتوراه في الشريعة الإسلامية قسم العقيدة في كلية الدعوة وأصول الدين بجامعة أم القرى والتي هي بعنوان شرح الإمام علي القاري على كتاب ألفاظ الكفر للعلامة بدر الرشيد دراسة وتحقيق.
