يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة تعليم الرياضيات للمرحلة الإبتدائية (الجزء الثالث) وقد أعد هذا الكتاب كما يقول مؤلفه الأستاذ محمود رمضان، تلبية لروحية منهج الرياضيات ومبادئ علم المعرفة التكويني والرياضي.
يعتمد الكتاب الواقع مجالاً له والبيئة التي يعيش فيها التلميذ حيث يتجلى غالباً المظهر النفعي للرياضيات. وهكذا يوضع التلميذ في مواجهة مسائل حقيقية فيخمن ويحرب حلولاً ويتحقق من صحتها ومن ثم يستنتج رويداً رويداً مقاربات تمكنه لاحقاً من بناء نماذجه الخاصة التي سوف تشكل مقدمات شخصية ومنطقية لنماذج عائدة لهذا العلم.
وبناءاً على ما تقدم يساعد هذا الكتاب طلاب المرحلة الإبتدائية في تعلَم مادة الرياضيات من حيث عمليتي الجمع والطرح، وكتابة الأرقام والأخرى ومقارنة الأعداد وترتيبها ترتيباً تنازلياً وتصاعدياً وعملية تدوير الأعداد (أقرب إلى عشرة –أقرب إلى مئة- أقرب إلى ألف)، وكذلك مفهوم (الزمن) من خلال الساعة وعدد الأيام من اليوم والشهر والسنة، وغيرها من عمليات القسمة والكسور وجمع الكسور والأعداد العشرية ضمن عمليتي الجمع والطرح والمقارنة والضرب والقسمة، يتبع ذلك درس خاص في (الأشكال الهندسية): المستطيل والمربع والمثلث، ثم مبادئ عملية (الإحصاء) وعمليات (الربح والخسارة) و(الشراء والبيع) وذلك من خلال مسائل رياضية مبسطة صيغت بأسلوب عملي يتلائم وذهنية التلميذ في هذه المرحلة.
