تتسم الدراسات التاريخية بأهميتها القصوى في عالم بات فيه من الضوري فهم الأسس التي تقوم عليها العلاقات بين الأمم والشعوب. وبنفس القدر من الأهمية يصبح الحديث عن العالم الإسلامي مطلباً رئيسياً للمؤرخين والباحثين. وفي هذا الكتاب يتناول المؤلف ثلاثة من أهم الشعوب الإسلامية: الأتراك العثمانيين، الفرس، ومسلحي الهند. وهو يركز في ثنايا بحثه على تاريخ هذه الشعوب بين القرن الخامس عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين.
يقع الكتاب في ثلاثة أبواب رئيسية الباب الأول مخصص للأتراك العثمانيين، ويتحدث فيه عن تكوين ونمو الدولة العثمانية والظروف التي مهدت لظهورها في الأناضول، والفتوحات العثمانية في البلاد العربية، والكفاح العثماني ضد العدوان البرتغالي على الديار الإسلامية ثم يتحدث عن تدهور الدولة العثمانية.
أما الباب الثاني فيدور حول تاريخ فارس الحديث وعهد الأسرة الصفوية في فارس (1500-1722)، ويتحدث المؤلف أيضاً عن الأسرة القاجارية وأوضاع فارس في خضم الصراع الدولة ضد نابليون، والأزمات الفارسية العثمانية خلال القرن التاسع عشر والمشكلة الأفغانية والأزمات الفارسية البريطانية ونهاية الأسرة القاجارية ويعرض المؤلف في الباب الثالث لتاريخ الهند الإسلامية فيتحدث عن الدولة المغولية من عهد بابر إلى عهد أكبر، والاستعمار البريطاني وسقوط الإمبراطورية المغولية. ثم ظهور دولة باكستان.
