هناك اتفاق بين معظم المؤرخين والعارفين بالتاريخ اليمني على أن عصر الدولة الرسولية (626-858هـ/1404-1228م) كان أزهى عصور اليمن خلال العصور الإسلامية الوسيطية، سواء من الناحية السياسية، أو الإدارية أو الاقتصادية أو الثقافية أو الحضارية. وكما يقول أحد الباحثين-إسماعيل الأكوع فقد كانت: "أبرز دول اليمن الحضارية، وأخلدها ذكراً، وأبعدها صيتاً، وأغزرها ثراء، وأوسعها كرماً وإنفاقاً... ويعتبر عصرها عزة في جبين اليمن في عصرها الإسلامي، ذلك لأن عصرها كان أخصب عصور اليمن ازدهاراً بالمعارف المتنوعة، وأكثرها إشراقاً بالفنون المتعددة، وأعزرها إنتاجاً بثمرات الأفكار اليانعة في شتى ميادين المعرفة...".
وبناءً عليه، فقد جاءت هذه الدراسة لتسلط الضوء على التاريخ السياسي، والحضاري لهذه الدولة العظيمة بشكل عام، وخلال الربع الأول القرن التاسع الهجري (الخامس عشر ميلادي) بشكل خاص، معتمدة في مادتها على المصادر الأصلية، سواء المخطوطة منها أو المطبوعة، بالإضافة إلى استنارتها في التحليل واستنتاج بالآراء والنتائج التي وردت في العديد من الدراسات والبحوث الحديثة ذات الصلة سواء العربية منها أو الأجنبية.
