هذا كتاب خصصه المؤلف للحديث عن بيت الحكمة ودور العلم في الحضارة الإسلامية حيث تتبع في القسم الأول منه نشأت بين الحكمة منذ البدايات في العصر الأموي ثم في زمن المنصور والرشيد والمأمون، وكان زمن المأمون هو زمن بيت الحكمة الحقيقي الأصيل إذ صار جامعة للعلم والتأليف والترجمة ومأوى للعلماء، وخزائن الكتب ومنه توفد وفود العلماء والمترجمين لجلب كتب اليونان في الطب والفلسفة والفلك وغيرها، وفيه حديث عن صاحب بيت الحكمة والفلكيين والمترجمين ونفقات هذا البيت الكبير ونظامه وأبرز علمائه، ثم نهايته.
وتناول القسم الثاني: ما سمي ببيت الحكمة ودور العلم من خزائن الكتب الأخرى، التي نهجت نهج بيت الحكمة وحاكته، ومنها خزانة الحكمة لعلي بن يحيى المنجم، وخزانة الحكمة للفتح بن خاقان، ودار العلم الفاطمية أو دار الحكمة، وكان تأسيس بعض هذه الخزائن لأغرض مذهبية، وتناول هذا القسم أيضاً الخزائن الملحقة بالمدارس والمساجد والربط والمشاهد، في العراق والشام ومصر.
أما في القسم الثالث فقد تناول: خزائن كتب الخلفاء والأمراء، وما كان في خزائنهم من وفرة في نفائس الكتب وثرائها. وتناول في القسم الرابع: خزائن كتب العلماء والأدباء والوزراء، وهو من أكثر الخزائن ثراء ووفرة إذ تناول تسعاً وأربعين خزانة منذ أول العصر العباس حتى نهايته في القرن السابع بعد سقوط بغداد.
