هذا الكتاب هو ثمرة تجربة شاعر خبر الشعر وعجم عوده، استوعب التجربة بعمق، وتحمل إرهاصاتها بصبر وأناة.
اشتهر المازني -بين العامة والخاصة- بأنه كاتب مقالة وقصة، ومترجم لا يشق له غبار. لكن إسهاماته في الشعر: نظماً ونقداً -وإن لم تكن ذائعة الصيت تماماً- إلا أنه لا يمكن الإحاطة بكنه الشعر دون استيعاب نظرية المازني في الشعر.
ولا عجب في ذلك فالمازني أحد أركان "الديوان" إلى جانب عباس محمود العقاد وعبد الرحمن شكري. هذه المدرسة التي دعت إلى التجديد في الشعر، والتزمت مناهضة مدرسة أحمد شوقي وحافظ إبراهيم التي دعت إلى التقليد والمحاكاة.
يمثل هذا الكتاب زبدة خبرات أصحاب الديوان -وتحديداً المازني- وهو بالتالي يميط اللثام عن نظريات في الشعر ومواقف تغني الدارس وتسد نقصاً في المكتبة العربية.
