يدرس هذا الكتاب العلاقة بين الفن والميتافيزيقيا في فلسفة شوبنهاور. وليست الغاية هنا تبيان أن فلسفة تشوبنهاور الجمالية قد بنيت على مبادئ أو أسس مذهبه الميتافيزيقي، وإنما الهدف الأساسي الذي ينبغي أن يكون موضع الاهتمام هو ذلك السؤال: هل نجحت هذه الأسس الميتافيزيقية في تفسير طبيعة الفن في علاقته بالوجود، أي بوصفه "ظاهرة ذات بعد ميتافيزيقي" وبناءً على هذا، فقد صدّر البحث بمدخل لفلسفة شوبنهاور بوجه عام، وخصص الفصل الثاني منها لمذهبه الميتافيزيقي، أما الفصل الثالث فيحدد موضوع ودلالة نظرية الفن في فلسفة شوبنهاور، أي يحدد علاقتها بمبحث الميتافيزيقيا ومبحث الأخلاق، فإذا ما تحددت رؤية ملامح هذه النظرية والطابع الميتافيزيقي المميز لها، تمّ الانتقال بعد ذلك إلى معالجة الموضوعات والقضايا التي تناولتها هذه النظرية، وذلك فيما يلي من فصول. والمنهج المتبع في البحث هو منهج تحليلي نقدي، فهو لا يهدف إلى عرض نظرية شوبنهاور في الفن، بل يتعامل أساساً مع النصوص لإبراز الاتجاه السائد فيها، وتحليله، وتقييمه.
