يضم هذا الكتاب عدداً من المقالات التي تعالج مواضيع في شتى المجالات معالجة وصفية وتحليلية ونقية وتفكيكية. تواجه الشعوب العربية تحديات مصيرية في شتى مجالات الحياة، وتعاني من التخلف الذي له تجليات في مجالات التربية والثقافة والاقتصاد والإدارة والعلاقات الاجتماعية، ومن تجليات هذا التخلف: الفقر والجهل والأمية، وتبديد الثروات ونهبها، والحرمان والخضوع للسيطرة الأجنبية، والاستبداد والطغيان الاجتماعيان، والنقص في اكتساب العلوم التكنولوجيا الحديثة وفي تطبيقها، والثقافة المشوهة، والجمود الفكري، وانعدام الحرية الفكرية، وغيرها. وهذه العلل نتيجة لعوامل داخلية وخارجية متفاعلة دامت قروناً وتحاول هذه المقالات دراستها، وهي ذات طبيعة معقدة، ولذا فإن تناولها لا بد أن يكون مثار خلاف.
وإثباتاً للحقيقة نقول: إن هذه العلل ليست مقصورة على الشعوب العربية، فهي منتشرة في كل بقاع المعمورة، غير أن انتشارها يتفاوت بين شعب وآخر، وبين قارة وأخرى، وبين ثقافة وأخرى. ويبدو أن انتشار هذه العلل بين الشعوب النامية، التي يشكل العرب جزءاً منها، أكبر منه بين الشعوب المتقدمة، خصوصاً في أوروبا وأمريكا الشمالية.
ويتضمن قسم من هذه المقالات أيضاً آرائي في بعض القضايا المهمة جداً، التي تشغل حيزاً كبيراً في فكري ووجداني والتي تقض مضجعي وأسمع هديرها المدوي في عقلي فتكاد تشف أعصاب دماغي، ومن هذه القضايا أذكر، على وجه الخصوص، وضع المرأة، والانغلاق الفكري، وعدم الوعي بدينامية الظواهر الاجتماعية والثقافية والاقتصادية والنفسية، و التردي العربي.
