يضم بين دفتيه حوالي مئة مقال كتبها المؤلف وهو مقيم في الولايات المتحدة. وتتناول المقالات الحالات والتغيرات السياسية والاجتماعي والاقتصادية الحاصلة على صعيد البلدان النامية، ومنها البلدان العربية ومن هذه الحالات الغزو الثقافي والتبعية الفكرية والفقر. وفي ثنايا الكتاب تأكيد على مفهوم التأثير في تشكيل العلاقات بين الأفراد والجماعات والدول وطريقة التناول المعتمدة في الكتاب تستند إلى أسس منهج نشاط (أو دينامية) كل العواملالمتفاعلة العاملة في أحداث الأثر والتغيير: عوامل النفس والتاريخ والثقافة والاقتصاد والأخلاق والدين والعقل والعاطفة واللغة. وينطلق هذا المنهج من إدراك أن الظاهرة لا تفسر بمنهج ذي بعد واحد وإدراك شمول تداخل كل العوامل المتفاعلة المكونة للظاهرة والمؤدية إلى التغير.
وبالتالي فإن هذه المقالات، بأغلبيتها الكبيرة، تنحو منحى وصفياً وتحليلياً وتفكيكياً وتفسيرياً، وتعنى باختلاف وتغير الظروف والقراءات والتفاسير ووجوه الفهم. ومما ينظم هذه المقالات الإشارة إلى الحاجة إلى إدراك نسبية بعض المفاهيم من قبيل الديمقراطية والحداثة ونشاط (دينامية) مفهوم السياسة بمعنى أنها طريقة تحقيق التأثير في بيئة بشرية تعمل فيها عوامل طبيعية واجتماعية ونفسية متفاعلة باستمرار.
ومن مشاكل محاولات التناول الفكري لمشاكل الشعوب ابتغاء علاجها أن العقل الذي هو أداة هذا التناول يبدو أنه ليس في قدرته أن يدرس ويعالج نفسه. ويرى المؤلف أن البشر لن يقضوا على مشاكلهم دون أن يتجسد في مواقفهم ووجوه سلوكهم الوهي بنسبية المفاهيم وباختلافها من ناحية التجرد والتحدد، والوعي بوهم تنافض بعض المفاهيم والوعي بعدم وجود الكمال في الحياة البشرية.
