ويلقي كثير من المسلمين تبعة تدهور أوضاعهم على الغرب، والاستعمار، والصهيونية، بينما يرى كثير من المستشرقين وبعض المثقفين المسلمين أن السبب الرئيس في تخلف المسلمين يعود إلى الدين الإسلامي وشموله مختلف نواحي الحياة.
وهذا الكتاب رد على هؤلاء الذين يحاولون الاستدلال على تخلف الدين الإسلامي بما أصاب أهله من تأخر وانحطاط. الإسلام أرسى قيماً معينة وأينما وجدت هذه القيم وجد الإسلام. فقد أوصل الإسلام العرب إلى أوج عزهم عندما أخذوا بهذه القيم، كما أن الغرب أخذ بها في فترة ازدهاره فكانت سبباً في تطوره ونموه. وعندما أهمل المسلمون هذه القيم، في مرحلة من تاريخهم، كان إهمالهم لها سبباً في تأخرهم، فالإسلام يدعو إلى التقيد بمنهج الله الذي خلق الكون وأرسى قواعده ونظامه، وعلى الإنسان أن ينقاد لقانون الخالق ويمتثل لأمره ونهيه.
وعلى هذا الأساس، "التنمية المستدامة في المجتمع الإسلامي" موجه للقارئ المسلم بقدر ما هو موجه للقارئ غير المسلم لأنه يدعو الإنسان، كل إنسان، في هذا العالم أن يأخذ برسالة الله، ورسالة الله للبشر واحدة، والتحديات التي يواجهها العالم واحدة، وحقيقة هذا الكون واحدة، ولا مجال للخروج من أزمات هذا العصر ومآزقه المتلاحقة إلا بالانصياع لهذه الحقيقة.
