يعتبر هذا الكتاب، برصانته الأكاديمية ومنهجيته العلمية وأسلوبه الواضح الناصع، بداية لانطلاقة حركة بحث أصيلة في هذا القطر، من شأنها كسر طوق احتكار دراسات الشرق الأدنى القديم، التي كانت وقفا على الباحثين الغربيين ممن نلجأ إليهم كلما جئنا للتفتيش عن منابع ثقافتنا القديمة... وإذا قُيّض لهذه الانطلاقة أن تستمر فسوف يكون تحت أيدينا في المستقبل القريب مصادر مباشرة مبنية على النصوص الأصلية وعلى قراءات يقوم بها ورثة هذا التراث أنفسهم دون وصاية أحد أو وصاية فكرية وإيديولوجوية من أي نوع. فنحن أصحاب هذا التراث والأحق به والأقدر دراسته وترجمته والتعليق عليه. إن ثقافة الشرق القديم على بعدها وانقطاعها والقرون الطويلة التي تفصلها عنها، مازالت حية وسارية في كثير من مناحي ثقافتنا الحديثة وحياتنا اليومية وعاداتنا وتقاليدنا وذلك إضافة إلى صلة القربى بين لغتنا العربية بفصاحها وعاميتها وتلك اللغات التي دونت بها أدبيات تلك الثقافة، الأمر الذي يعطي باحثنا العربي ميزة لا يستهان بها على الباحث الغربي. وإني لأتذكر في هذا المجال أننا استطعنا في جلسة تضم عدداً من الأصدقاء المهتمين بنصوص أوغاريت، أن نترجم مقطعاً من ملحمة البعل اعتبره علماء الأوغاريتيات غامضاً وعصياً عن الفهم، اعتماداً منا على مفردات اللغة المحكية في منطقة اللاذقية ومنطقة فلسطين وذلك دون اللجوء إلى الأساليب الملتوية من قلب وإبدال وإرجاع إلى المصدر، مما شاع مؤخراً لدى بعض الباحثين. وكانت النتيجة مذهلة حقاً فقد تكلم النص الأوغاريتي بلسلن ما زالت مفرداته متداولة إلى يومنا هذا في لغة الناس التي تحتوي على ذخيرة غنية من كلمات اللهجات السورية القديمة وتعابيرها. وبالاطلاع على محتويات هذا الكتاب نجد بعد المقدمة بعض العناوين مثل: (هذه الملحمة ، أضواء على الملحمة: (ملحمة أم أسطورة أم...؟ - عنوان الملحمة - ناظم الملحمة - شخصيات الملحمة - زمان الملحمة ومكانها - إيحاءات فكرية - الأسلوب التعبيري)).
