الحقيقة وكما يقول غونثالو سوبخانو إن أول ما يجب الاتفاق عليه هو أن مسرح اتشغاراي يتحرك بين مقولتين: الدراما اللازمنية والدراما المعاصرة. والدراما اللازمنية هي التي أشار إليها كلارين حين تكلم عن كاتبنا فقال: "اتشغاراي الدراما الرومانسية، الشعرية، الأسطورية، وتكاد تكون دائماً شعراً، مليئة بالرؤى وبالقشعريرة والرعشات، اتشغاراي الذي لا يكاد يعجب الجمهور الذكي أبدا... اتشغاراي الذي لا يعجب ربيليا أيضاً، اتشغاراي: بحر وعلى الرغم من أن اتشغاراي لم يتخل كلياً عن سعيه وراء التأثيرية ولا حتى حين كتب نوعاً من مسرح المدينة المتعلق بالطبقات الاجتماعية العليا.
ومن الجدير بالذكر أن مسرح اتشغاراي لا يعرف المصالحة عادةً، فهو مسرح مواجهة بين قطبين: الحقيقة من جهة والرأي من جهة أخرى، كما هو الحال في المسرحية التي بين أيدينا والقواد الكبير، واللطخة التي تنظف، وبين الحب والشرف، الحرية والاستبداد، كما في الموت على الشفاه. والملفت للنظر أن الحقيقة وهي عادة ما تكون شخصه لا تفسر في رأي الآخر إلا على أساس الجنون وعملياً المنتصر في النهاية هو الرأي، العادات والمنهزم هو الحقيقة لأنها جنون بالنسبة إليه. فمثلاً لا شيء ينفع دو لورنثو العالم والعارف والحكيم حين يكتشف الحقيقة، ولا يكتشفها معه الآخرون، كل ما يصيبه منهم هو الشفقة عليه، فلا حب زوجته ولا حب ابنته وتضحيتها في النهاية ومحاولتها الهروب أو الذهاب معه يفيده في الشيء، كل ما يناله منها هو أنها تعده أن تذهب لإنقاذه وبذلك تخسر سعادتها وتخسر حبها وتخسر الحقيقة أمام رأي الآخر.
