تدور أحداث الرواية حول اربع شخصيات: "حواء"، التي باعت جسدها، أو بعبارة أدق، ظلال جسد "صاد"، لتدعم مادياً تعليمه وحبه، وهو لاجئ منذ الولادة، يقرأ لـ "كليليو" الذي يمتهن الأعمال القذرة، ويبلع مسامير الاخرين الصدئة، مع ما يكفي من الغضب لملء سلة حياته المثقوبة عشرات المرات. وأخيراً، "سافيتا"، الفتاة الطيبة في نظر أهلها، والتي ترفض أن تكون كما هي، فيما يربطها بحواء.
أربعة مصائر التقت وتداخلت في المغترب الذي تغيب فيه الأمهات في ضباب الاستسلام، ويجد فيه الاباء مزايا السلطة في الكحول. هؤلاء الأربعة ممنوعون من قيادة الدراما التي تكمن فيها حبكة الرواية: فقد وجدت "سافيتا" ميتة وملقاة في المزبلة. أي جريمة تلك؟ جريمة ألم؟ جريمة حزن؟ اغتصاب حقير ناتج عن الحب؟ أم الدعارة؟ يرمى "كليليو" في السجن ككبش فداء، ويجد "صاد" و"حواء" نفسيهما في مواجهة القدر بدافع التحريض... تجذرت هذه الرواية في جزيرة في المحيط الهندي، ولم تعرف تأثير صدى تعدد لهجات العالم المحيط الذي يسوده الإعدام والنفي وألم المراهقين الذي لم يكن له حدود. ولم تنمح الروائية شخصياتها قوة الإنسانية التي تتجاوز الحدود الجغرافية.
