"أنا مرتفعة مع الغيوم. الشمس خلفي تبدّل ألوان السماء والغيوم تبدّل نفسها، ببطء، ببطء بعضها قرنفلي، بعضها أبيض، تنتفخ كالفقاعات. في الأسفل سد رمادي غير كاف لإنزال المطر. يزداد طولاً واسوداداً، ينمو له خطم نحيل وجسم طويل وينتهي بزيل ثم يتحرك جرذ رمادي ضخم عبر السماء يأكل السماء.
تذكر الفتاة تلك الصورة، قالت: هذا ليس هو. أنا أجلس هنا حيث كنت أجيء في غالب الأحيان حين كان في الجزيرة، جئت لأبتعد عن الآخرين، كي أنتظر وحدي. أنا أراقب الجرذ، انه يفقد نفسه، حجمه، يأكل السماء، وأنا أنتظره كي يعود. أنتظر. أنتظر كي أعود إلى المنزل". في هذه المجموعة القصصية تحاول نادين جورديمر تصوير واقع الحياة الإنسانية بأسلوب أدبي رائع، ولغة مقتصية بسيطة، تجعل من قصصها حكايات جميلة بعفويتها وصدقها دون أن يعني ذلك ابتعاد الروائية عن العمق التحليلي.
ولدت نادين جورديمر في عام 1923 في جنوب أفريقيا، حققت مكانتها الروائية في ظروف صعبة، فقد استنكرت وكادت الضغط المفروض عليها للتماشي مع أفكار العنصر الأبيض المميز في نظام التمييز العنصري. كانت ناشطة سياسياً، وكتبت الكثير عن العلاقة بين الراديكاليين البيض والليبراليين السود. أكثر أعمالها المقروءة هي روايات مثل "ضيف الشرف" و"المتحفظ". وقد تم منحها جائزة نوبل للآداب سنة 1991.
