تولّى الخلافة الإسلامية بعد وفاة أبي بكر الصديق وقد كان ابن الخطّاب قاضيًا خبيرًا و اشتهر بعدله وإنصافه الناس من المظالم، سواء كانوا مسلمين أو غير مسلمين، وكان ذلك أحد أسباب تسميته بالفاروق، لتفريقه بين الحق والباطل.
يناقش الكتاب حياة عمر وتفاصيلها وذلك منذ ما قبل دخوله إلى الإسلام حتى توليه الخلافة عقب وفاة أبي بكر الصديق ،وما شهدته الخلافة الإسلامية على يد عمر بن الخطاب من الإنجازات السياسية والاقتصادية والعسكرية التي تحققت خلال عشر سنوات فقط من فترة حكمه، حيث شهدت البلاد استقرارًا داخليًّا، وتوسعًا خارجيًّا شمل الشام والعراق وفارس ومصر، كذلك امتدت الإمبراطورية حتى حدود الصين من الشرق، وإفريقيا من الغرب، وبحر قزوين من الشمال، والسودان من الجنوب.
