اعتاد كلب الجنرال البول على سيقان الجنود المغروسة في الأرض بوقفة استعدادية لا نهاية لها، وأمام المتعة التي كان يجدها الكلب في ذلك والفخر الذي كان يشعر به الجنرال من ذكاء كلبه وحكمته، أمر بتخصيص كتيبة من العسكر بكامل عتادهم وآلياتهم الثقيلة والخفيفة للإشراف على عادة كلبه، وحين مات الكلب واندلعت الحرب ظل جنود الكتيبة عاجزين عن فعل شيء سوف الوقوف باستعداد كامل، فتحولوا مع الوقت إلى تماثيل يتصور قربها السياح ويبول عليها باعة الصحف وعمال النظافة وعابرو السبيل، ومن شاء من الكلاب الشريدة.
