جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب من الحاجة لوجود كتاب يساعد المشرفين في مجال التربية الخاصة في مجالي الإشراف على طلبة البكالوريوس من تخصص التربية الخاصة في الكليات المتوسطة والجامعات ومجال الإشراف على مراكز التربية الخاصة (المشرف المقيم أو المتنقل). وجوهر هذه الحاجة لمثل هذا الكتاب هو عدم توفر كتاب يتناول الإشراف بالتربية الخاصة بشكل مباشر ومفصل حسب حدود علم المؤلف. ويحمل هذا الكتاب طابع تطبيقي ممثلاً بوجود قائمة ملاحق كبيرة توضح سير عمل المشرف بالتفصيل.
