يأتي هذا الكتاب من أجل المساهمة في النقاش العالمي حول رهانات المستقبل، حيث تقوم "شعبة الاستشراف والفلسفة والعلوم الإنسانية" التابعة للأونسكو، ومنذ عام 1997، بإدارة سلسلة "مداولات القرن الحادي والعشرين" التي تجمع في كل حلقة حوارية اثنين أو ثلاثة من ا لعلماء والمثقفين والمبدعين وصناع القرار ذوي الشهرة العالمية، وقد أتوا من اتجاهات مختلفة، يجدوهم فكر استشرافي في متداخل الاختصاصات.
هذا الكتاب يشتمل على مختارات للأفكار التي عرضت أثناء هذه اللقاءات الاستشرافية، من الجلسة العاشرة حتى الجلسة العشرين التي عقدت في 19 أيلول/سبتمبر عام 2001. كذلك قامت شعبة التوقع والدراسات بتنظيم سلسلة ثانية من "محاورات القرن الحادي والعشرين" التي جمعت غداة أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول/سبتمبر، في 8 كانون الأول/ديسمبر، أكثر من عشرين مشاركاً بارزاً على الساحة الدولية، وذلك من أجل تبادل الأفكار حول موضوع عام بعنوان "القيم إلى أين؟".
