في هذا الكتاب يقدم الأستاذ زهدي محمد عيد (مختارات من النثر العربي) العنوان الذي اختاره ليلبي حاجة طلاب المرحلة الجامعية وفقاً لمقررات جامعة البلقاء التطبيقية، وبحسب الخطة الموضوعة لكليات المجتمع في المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، وقد حرص المؤلف خلال كتابة مادة الكتاب على إثبات النصوص كما وردت في أفضل رواياتها، كما عرّف بأصحاب تلك النصوص، وقام بشرح إجمالي مع التعليق على النصوص.
وفي هذا الإطار، تم إلقاء الضوء على أهم الجوانب اللغوية والأسلوبية والبلاغية، تاركاً للطلبة شيئاً من الإستقصاء والبحث والتعليق والنقد، رغبة منه في تنمية روح البحث عند الطالب الجامعي.
وبناءً على ما تقدم ذكره تم تقسيم مختارات هذا الكتاب إلى خمسة وحدات: الوحدة الأولى: في الأدب الجاهلي وتضم أنواع من النثر العربي ومن خطب العرب، (قس بن ساعدة)، أما الوحدة الثانية فهي: في الأدب الإسلامي والأموي، وتضم: خطبة الوداع للرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وخطبة الإمام علي رضي الله عنه في قومه، وخطبة الحجاج عند توليه الكوفة، واختصت الوحدة الثالثة: في الأدب العباسي وما تضمه: وصية الأديب للجاحظ، المقامات، المقامة الملكية للحريري، ورسالة الغفران للمعري، كما اختصت الوحدة الرابعة: في الأدب الأندلسي والمملوكي، وتضم: من مقدمة ابن خلدون، وخطبة القاضي الفاضل، ومن كتاب الأمالي للقالي، وحديث ليلى الأخيلية مع الحجاج؛ وأخيراً الوحدة الخامسة وعنوانها "النثر العربي الحديث" وتضم مختارات من كتاب الغربال - ميخائيل نعيمة، ورواية مواكب الأحرار: نجيب الكيلاني، وقصة قصيرة - غسان كنفاني (رجال في الشمس)، ومسرحية أهل الكهف - توفيق الحكيم وتعريف بــ (الخاطرة الأدبية)... وغيرها.
