"إنّ الدوافع التي حدتني على صنع هذه المجموعة من المختارات كثيرة متعدّدة، ولكنّها - على تعدّدها - تنبع في الأساس من منبعٍ واحدٍ هو حرصي على إبقاء الوشيجة الطبيعيّة قائمة بين الشابّ العربيّ والأدب العربيّ - قديمه وحديثه - إذ تكاد الجفوة أن تقوم بينهما، محدثةً هوّة تتّسع على مرّ الأيّام، ويعمل في توسيعها نزوع نحو "التغريب" في ثقافتنا العامّة وفي مناهجنا الدراسيّة، ويرافق هذا التغريب ترويج مضلّل يقوم به نفرٌ من الأدباء والمفكّرين أخذوا منذ نصف قرن أو يزيد - بعد أن تلقّوا ثقافتهم في البلاد الأجنبيّة - يرفعون من شأن الآداب الأجنبيّة ويحطّون من شأن الأدب العربيّ والثقافة العربيّة، مدّعين أنّهما مقصّران في الفكر وفي العبارة وفي الأسلوب".
"وليس الردّ البالغ على هؤلاء المغرّرين إنتحاء الجدل النظريّ، بل تقديم أمثال هذه المختارات التي تُظهر ما في التراث العربيّ من مستويات أدبيّة فنيّة فكريّة ثقافيّة عالية، يمكن أن تُقارن - من دون تردّد - بأرقى الآداب العالميّة الأخرى".
