ابن المقفع واحد من المفكرين الأحرار، الذين تعرفهم البشرية في كل عصر ومصر، والذين يعانون دائماً من اضطهاد السلطات الطاغية المستبدة، فيعيشون في خوف وقلق دائمين، وغالباً ما يقدمون حياتهم على مذبح أفكارهم الحرة الرافضة لكل شكل من أشكال الظلم والاستبداد.
وليست الأمر يتوقف عند هذا الحد، بل غالباً ما يتعرضون للتشويه، وتلصق بها أبشع التهم المستهجنة في عصرهم.
آمن بالعقل وسيلة لخلاص البشرية في عصر تميز بالقوة الغاشمة والبطش، ورغم حذره الشديد في ممارسة عقلانيته المستنيرة إلا أنه لم يسلم. رغم محاولته تغليف حكمته بكل ما لا يثير غضب الحاكم المستبد إلا أن هذا الحاكم لم يكن يحتمل النقد سواء كان صريحاً أم مبطناً، وهكذا نجح الحاكم في القضاء على ابن المقفع، ولم ينجح ابن المقفع في إنقاذ الحاكم (والرعية) من الظلم.
ومضى الحاكم وبقي ابن المقفع مشعلاً مضيئاً، ومنارة مشعة في تاريخنا الأدبي، ومفكراً مصلحاً يحتل موقعه في الفكر الإنساني بعامة. إن هذه الدراسة التي تحاول الجمع بين الشمول والدقة تتوخى تقديم واحد من أبرز أدبائنا إلى القارئ العربي بطريقة أكاديمية مبسطة تراعي الأسلوب العلمي من جهة وتلبي حاجة القارئ العادي من جهة ثانية. وقد زودت بمختارات من نتاج الكاتب بحيث تتيح للقارئ الإطلاع مباشرة على بعض هذا النتاج.
