يذكر التاريخ أن عمر بن حفصون (توفي سنة 306هــ) أحد أشهر معارضي الدولة الأموية في الأندلس، عاصر ابن حفصون في ثوراته أربعة من الأمراء الأمويين، بدءاً من عام 267هـ في عهد الأمير محمد بن عبد الرحمن وحتى عهد عبد الرحمن الناصر لدين الله وسيطر خلالها على مناطق كبيرة في جنوب الأندلس، ولاقت حركته ترحيب من أعداد كبيرة من سكان تلك المناطق من المولدين والمستعربين، وقاومتها سلطات الدولة الأموية إلى أن أنهى عبد الرحمن الناصر لدين الله حركة ابن حفصون وخلفائه عام 316هــ.
وفي هذا الكتاب أيضاً يتناول الدكتور سيمون الحايك العلاقات بين المسلمين والنصارى في قرطبة عشية الفتنة، ويذكر عوامل التفرقة وعوامل التوحيد بين المسلمين والنصارى، فالزواج والروابط العائلية موجودة بين الملتين في الأندلس بحيث أن العاملين الديني والثقافي اللذين في الأصل هما أداة تفرقة، لم يتوصلا إلى تفكيك العرى العائلية المتأتية عن الزواج المختلط.
كما يقدم المؤلف صورة مهمة عن التعايش السائد بين ثلاثة طبقات في المجتمع الأندلسي "المسلمون والنصارى واليهود" حيث اعتبر أن هذا الخلاف في الدين خلق نوعاً من التعايش والتسامح المتبادل رغم أنه في مناسبات عديدة أصبح سبباً لتأزمات عائلية عنيفة "أخ يدفع بأخيه المقتنع بمسيحيته إلى الموت على النصرانية، وهذه الحالة الماثلة في الجو العائلي تتكرر في الجيش وفي مختلف مرافق الدولة".
ويستمر المؤلف في عرض صفحات من الحياة العسكرية في تلك الآونة من الزمن ومواقف السلاطين في قرطبة من أهل الذمة مستشهداً بكتاب عبد الرحمن بن غنم لعمر بن الخاطب حين صالح نصارى أهل الشام، وما كتبه عمر بن الخطاب إلى عثمان بن حنيف بالكوفة حول "الجزية"، وإضاءات أخرى حول الثوار وبطولاتهم حتى وفاة ابن حفصون.
