استطاع الفكر التربوي الإباضي الحفاظ على وجوده وإبراز شخصيته الإسلامية الإباضية خلال أربعة عشر قرناً في الشمال الأفريقي. ويرى الباحث عبد الرحمن عثمان حجازي بأن هذا الفكر التربوي استطاع الحفاظ على شخصية أتباعه لما امتاز به من أساليب صاغها لتتماشى مع الواقع ولتستشرف المستقبل.
لذا فقد قام ببحثه هذا والذي تضمن دراسة هذا الفكر التربوي وتطوره بهدف الاستفادة منه في صياغة فكر تربوي إسلامي معاصر. وإبراز القواسم المشتركة بين الفكر التربوي عند الإباضية والفكر التربوي عن أهل السنة والجماعة.
ونهج الباحث لتلك الغاية منهجاً علمياً هو المنهج التاريخي الوصفي التحليلي، الذي يقوم على استخراج الفكر التربوي والآراء التربوية في الفكر الإباضي، وإبراز دور العلماء في خدمة هذا الفكر، وربطه بالقوى والعوامل الثقافية المؤثرة.
وقد تضمنت تلك الدراسة الفصول الخمسة التالية، الفصل الأول: تناول فيه الباحث نشأة المذهب الإباضي، وعرض في الفصل الثاني ثم ناقش الأهداف التربوية عند الإباضية، والوسائل والأساليب التي اعتمدت في تحقيق هذه الأهداف، وانتقل في الفصل الثالث للحديث عن تطور التعليم الإباضي في مرحلتي الكتمان والظهور، وخصص الفصل الرابع لتفصيل وتقييم الشروط التي يجب توافرها في المعلم، في التربية الإسلامية وفي الفكر التربوي الإباضي، ثم عرض في الفصل الخامس للنشاطات التعليمية واللامنهجية في مدارس العزابة وتوافقها مع الفكر التربوي الإباضي ثم ناقش موضوع التأديب في التربية الإسلامية والفكر التربوي الإباضي.
