يتناول هذا الكتاب تكوين العقل في المجتمع العراقي من الناحيتين الحضارية / الأسطورية والتاريخية، فالعقل في المجتمع العراقي حسب رأي المؤلف يتكون من اللاوعي الأسطوري والوعي التاريخي وهو ما أطلق على تسميته بــ"العقل الشعبي". وقد استفاد المؤلف من مدرسة كارل يونغ في علم النفس التحليلي للوصول إلى الأنماط الأسطورية التي يفكر بها الإنسان بلا وعي منه، أما الوعي التاريخي الجمعي فهو مصطلح إجرائي القصد منه رسوخ الأحداث التاريخية في الوعي وإجترار هذا الحدث بإستمرار لتمييز الولاء للطائفة أو الفئة والجماعة.
من خلال تأويل الأسطورة والتاريخ فإن العقل الشعبي هو عقل تهويلي/ تقديسي بفعل نتاج أصول حضارية متاتية من بطولات الآلهة في الأساطير التي كتبها العراقيون القدماء/ العقل البائد وأصول تاريخية جاءت من بطولات بشرية لعدد من الشخصيات المؤثرة/ العقل السائد، ويقوم العقل الشعبي بـــ"إنتاج المعنى" بنقله من العقل إلى الفعل عبر أداء الطقوس والشعائر الدينية.
مبررات الكوفة لتأسيس العقل تاريخية تعود إلى الأحداث التي مرت بها بعد اختيار الإمام علي لها كي تكون عاصمة لدولته ثم الحروب التي خاضها والأحداث التي جرت لذريته ما أحدث شقاقاً عقلياً ينصرف إلى محتوى العقيدة التي ترتبط بعلي ولاءً أو عداءً أو خلافاً. أما المبرر السوسيولوجي فيغوص في عمق الحضارة العراقية. فكان على المؤلف ممارسة حفر تراثي/ حضاري في الشخصية العراقية للوصول إلى الأنماط التي كانت سائدة أنذاك ومطابقتها مع النمط التاريخي الكوفي وتحقيق ما يصبو إليه وهو تأويل العقل في المجتمع العراقي.
