يضم هذا الكتاب أعمال ندوة موسّعة عقدت في منتدى عبد الحميد شومان، في العام 1999، تكريماً للمؤرخ والمفكر العربي الكبير الأستاذ الدكتور عبد العزيز الدوري، الذي يعدّ بحق من أبرز الذين وضعوا الأسس الحديثة لإعادة قراءة التاريخ العربي بمنظور جديد.
وقد ضمت هذه الندوة نخبة من الأساتذة والباحثين، فضلاً عن أصدقاء الدوري وتلامذته مريديه، ، الذين قدموا إضاءات وافية عن الجوانب البارزة في شخصية الدوري بسائر جوانبها على امتداد رحلة حياته انطلاقاً من قريته "الدور" في العراق، مروراً ببغداد التي أسهم فيها بمجهود أكاديمي كبير، وصولاً إلى عمان التي كان لجامعتها الأردنية فرصة الإفادة من عطائه العلمي المميز.
ويتوقف المتتبع لحياة الدوري العلمية عند محطات أربع بارزة: أولاها، إنجازه الأكاديمي الغزير، حيث وضع عشرات الكتب والبحوث والتحقيقات في الحقول التاريخية المختلفة، وثانيتها اهتمامه بنقد المصادر وعدم الاعتماد على القراءة السردية للمراجع التاريخية، بل إعمال النظرة النقدية في كل ما يقرأ، وثالثتها التركيز على تاريخ الناس وتتبع طرق حياتهم وتنظيماتهم، أما المحطة الرابعة فتجلت في اهتمام الدوري بالفكرة القومية وإيلائها كل عناية ممكنة من خلال البحث عن جذورها التاريخية ومكوناتها، يحركه في ذلك التزامه العميق بثوابت الأمة.
ومن المؤمل أن يشكل هذا الإصدار فائدة مرجوة لكل المهتمين بقراءة التاريخ العربي أملاً بتجاوز عثرات الأمة، وتطلعاً إلى مستقبل أرحب لها.
