في الحب الإلهي تتطهر القلوب، وتتسامى النفوس، وتتقوى البصرية، وتعظم الأخلاق، وتنتشر الأضواء نوراً يشع في أقطار الجسم كافة، وفي مراتب الروح عامة. ويحلق أصحابه في الأعالي حيث الأنوار الباهرة، فتفيض العيون انسكاباً بالدموع المنهمرة، خشية وتوبة وندماً على عمر قد مضى وانقضى في ترّهات وأباطيل، ويفهم زائف زائل، وسعادة وهمية. ومن المعلوم أن البحث في الحب الإلهي صعب ودقيق للغاية، يكتنفه الغموض، ويلتبس على الكثيرين فهمه، لأن هؤلاء المحبين، قد استخدموا الكلمات التي تعبر عن معانٍ حسية، في تعبيرهم عن أذواقهم القلبية، ومحبتهم السامية لمولاهم عز وجل، فهؤلاء كانوا يفرحون بقدوم الليل حيث تنام العيون، وتسكن الحواس، وتهدأ الحركة، ويسيل ستره عليهم، ويلفهم بجلبابه فيختلون بخالقهم، ويأنسون بمناجاته، ويتنعمون بالتوسل إليه، ويبثونه ما يعتلج في صدورهم، فلا تسمع إلا البكاء والنحيب، والزفرات والتأوهات، وتصاعد الأنفاس والأنات، شوقاً ومحبة وحنيناً إلى خالق الأرض والسماوات، وكان من هؤلاء من ترجم ذلك كله أبياتاً شعرية، لهؤلاء المحبين كان هذا الديوان الذي ضم في طياته النزر اليسير من أخبارهم، ومجملاً للقول عن آرائهم، ومختصراً لسيدهم. والغاية من هذا الكتاب هو سد الثغرة واستكمال النقص الذي تشكو منه المكتبة العربية في هذا المجال.
