تعتبر الرياضة البدنية مقوما من مقومات الحفاظ على سلامة وتوازن حياة الانسان، ورافداً مهماً من روافد القدرة على السعي والضرب في مناكب الكون ، ومعينا على إتمام الواجبات وقضاء الحاجات، لهذا خصها الدين الاسلامي بعناية تكاد لا تشهد في باقي الملل، وأقرها إقراراً بيناً جليلاً وجعلها في حكم ما لا يتم الواجب إلا به، ونظر إليها بإعتبارها وسيلة تُعطى حكم المقصد.
ومن هذا المنطلق، رأى الفقيه العلاّمة أبو عبد الله محمد بن أحمد العبدي الكانوني الآسفي (تـ 1357هـ / 1938م) حاجة المسلمين اليوم عموماً والمغاربة على وجه الخصوص إلى أسباب حفظ الصحّة وترميم الذات بالرياضيات التي تُكسبها القوة، وتدفع عنها الأمراض، فألف رحمه الله هذا الكتاب للتأكيد على أهمية الرياضة البدنية، وبيّن جوانب قد تخفى على الكثير من المسلمين وغيرهم من عناية النبي الكريمة بالجانب الصحي والبدني، مشيراً أيضاً إلى إقتداء الخلفاء رضوان الله عليهم بالجَناب الشريفة في الحضّ على تعلّم أنواع الرياضات البدنية وتعليمها للأولاد، بل أكّد الفقيه الكانوني رحمه الله على أن ذلك من واجب الأبناء على الآباء.
وقد أفاض المؤلف في بيان أنواع الرياضيات المرغّب في ممارستها، وما يُرجى من ورائها من فوائد وأسرار صحّية وإجتماعية، كما دقّق النظر في علاقة الرياضة بالنسك الإسلامي، مبرزاً أن الشعائر التعبدية بالإضافة إلى كونها أفضل وأقدس العبادات الروحية؛ فإنّها انطوت ضمنياً على الرياضات البدنية.
