إن المنطلق الأساسى لهذه الدراسة هو التأكيد على أن المؤسسة الرياضية الإسلامية تحمل بين جنباتها كل مقومات المؤسسة الإجتماعية أو النظام الإجتماعى الناجح، ولذلك فإن جل الإهتمام فى هذه الدراسة قد أنصب على المعالجات الفلسفية والإجتماعية للمادة التاريخية الصحيحة، بدون أفتعال أوتعسف، لكنها لم تتناول الجوانب الشرعية والفقهية المتصلة بالرياضة، فذلك يحتاج إلى دراسة مستقلة فضلاً عن عدم اختصاص المؤلف بهذه الجوانب بحكم تخصصه الأكاديمى.
كما أن النقص الواضح فى الدراسات التاريخية للرياضة فى الإسلام قد يفسر على نحو خاطئ، كأن توصم الحضارة الإسلامية بإفتقارها إلى نظام واضح للرياضة، أو أن يعمد دعاة التشدد إلى التشكيك فى شرعية الرياضة وممارستها فى الإسلام، الأمر الذى قد يؤثر سلبياً على اتجاهات ومفاهيم المسلمين نحو الرياضية.
وقد قمت بتقسيم هذه الدراسة إلى تسعة فصول هى كالتالى: الفصل الأول (مفهوم الرياضة قديماً وحديثاً)، الفصل الثانى (فلسفة الرياضة فى الإسلام)، الفصل الثالث (الرياضة والسنة المطهرة)، الفصل الرابع (الفكر التربوى الإسلامى والرياضة)، الفصل الخامس (الطب الرياضى وعلوم الحركة فى الإسلام)، الفصل السادس (الفنون الإسلامية والرياضية)، الفصل السابع (الرياضة والحياة الإجتماعية للحضارات الإسلامية)، الفصل الثامن (الأنشطة الرياضية فى الحضارة الإسلامية)، الفصل التاسع (مقومات النظام الإجتماعى فى الرياضة الإسلامية)، بالإضافة إلى الخاتمة.
