يتعرض هذا الكتاب إلى حقبة مهمة من تاريخ العراق الحديث التي أعقبت قيام ثورة 14 تموز عام 1958، التي أصبحت فيها، محكمة المهداوي، مثار حديث الناس ووسائل الإعلام معاً وتكمن أهميتها في كون رئيسها العقيد فاضل عباس المهداوي كان أنموذجاً سيئاً في نظر الساسة والعسكريين آنذاك لسبب بسيط كونه لم يلفت أنظار قادته وآمريه طوال حياته العسكرية ولم يشر سجله إلى نبوغ في مجال معين، وجنى ثمار ثورة 14 تموز عام 1958 بفضل قرابته من الزعيم عبد الكريم قاسم ابن خالته الذي أسند إليه منصب رئاسة المحكمة العسكرية العليا الخاصة التي اقترنت باسمه فسميت بـ"محكمة المهداوي"، لقد كان هذا المنصب من أخطر المناصب وقتذاك، فقد وقف أمامه في قفص الاتهام أكبر رجالات الجيش والسياسة في العراق ليحاكمهم بشتى التهم التي كانت في أغلبها تعكس معارضتهم لنظام الزعيم قاسم الفردي الذي انحرف بسياسته عن مسار الثورة فكانت فرصة المهداوي للتنكيل برجال السياسة والجيش يدعمه في منهجه الزعيم عبد الكريم قاسم فتحولت المحكمة إلى مهزلة يتابعها المواطنون بمزيد من الحزن والغضب على الحال الذي آل إليه أبناؤهم، وانطلق المد الشيوعي في جميع أنحاء العراق ليدمر كل ما هو غيور على هذا الوطن العربي، وكانت قاعة المحكمة مرتعاً لهؤلاء الذين أعادوا مآسي المغول والتتار في العراق ولم تتوقف هذه المأساة حتى صبيحة 8 شباط عام 1963.
