ما هي أمنياتها الثلاث؟ كان يبدو أنها لا تتمنى شيئاً أبداً. بالمقابل تزاحمت في رأسي الصور: الصبي الذي نظر إليّ في باب النادي، الشاطىء، بابلو. "أن أكون سعيدة في الجزيرة السوداء"، طلبت هذا ثلاث مرات. نظرت مرة أخرى إلى أمي وغيّرت أمنيتي الثالثة: "أن تكون أمي سعيدة" . لكنني كنت أعرف أن هذا مستحيل، هناك أشخاص لم يُخلقوا كي يكونوا سعداء.
ومع ذلك ابتسمت أمي حين خرجنا.
إنه أطول، لكن نستطيع أن نذهب عن طريق الشاطىء - قالت.
كانت الشمس قد بدّلت موقعها خلال دقائق قليلة، صارت الآن على جانبنا. سرنا بجانب الشرفة المطلة على الصخور. في الأسفل وحتى الشاطىء: الرمل والبحر الشفيف. امرأة تواجه الأمواج. بثياب سباحة بيضاء، وركاها كبيران. بدت لي المرأة التي حملها بابلو إلى غرفته، لكن الماء كان يغطي رجليها ولم أستطع أن أرى ربلتيهما.
كان الطقس حاراً وكان ذراعاي قد اكتسبا رائحة اللحم المطبوخ التي تتخذها البشرة تحت الشمس في الصيف. لمست تحت إبطي وشممت يدي، مذاق بصل نيىء ملأ فمي. في البعيد يظهر بيت بابلو. تأملته باعتزاز، كما لو أنه بيتي، وأقرب منه على الشط سفينة مطمورة، معكوسة على مرآة الماء التي كانت تخلّفها الأمواج وراءها على الرمل وتسقط ظلها على البحر. طفلان وكلب يدخلون ويخرجون من نوافذها. لا بدأ أنها هناك منذ زمن طويل، لقد صيّرها الصدأ برتقالية. دخل عصفور من إحدى نوافذها ولم يخرج.
