"جوزف ب بريستلي" هو أحد أبرز الكتاب الإنكليز المعاصرين (1894-1985) ولد في يوركشازير، ودرس في كامبردج، وبدأ حياته الأدبية ناقداً، ثم كرس نفسه للرواية والمسرح، عاش كل الأحداث الكبرى في زمنه، وشارك العالم همومه المصيرية اشتهر عالمياً مع صدور روايته "الرفاق الطيبون" العام 1929 التي نقلت إلى السينما والمسرح. عرفت العربية له مسرحيتين صدرتا في سلسلة "من المسرح العالمي" الأول هي "منحى خطر" والثانية "كنت هنا من قبل" مع روايته "لعنة زحل" العام 1961، اتخذ أدب بريستلي توجهاً جديداً يواصل فيه، ويطور خطاً مميزاً في الأدب الإنكليزي، والرواية بالرغم من حبكتها البوليسية المشوقة هي تطبيق لنظريات عالم النفس يونغ وعالم الفيزياء بولي، حول وجود قوى في الكون قادرة على خلق مصادفات، بين أحداث لا علاقة لبعضها بالبعض الآخر، يترتب عليها نتائج مذهلة.
الرسام الشاب تيم بدفورد يغادر انكلترا بحثاً عن قريب له، عالم كيميائي اختفى في مؤسسة أبحاث في أميركا الجنوبية، ظناً منه أنه يتصرف بملء حريته، قبل أن يكتشف إنه ليس سوى بيدق في "اللعبة الكبرى" حيث بضعة متمولين، متعددي الجنسيات، يخططون لتغيير وجه العالم تحت تأثير كوكب زحل، رمز الشر.
وهكذا من نيويورك إلى تشيلي، ومن المناطق البركانية في البيرو إلى الساحل الأوسترالي، يتواصل هذا التحقيق الذي هو على حدود الممكن والمستحيل:
"هل توجد قوة ما فوق مغناطيسية تسمح للإدارة الإنسانية بالهيمنة على الصدفة وتوجيه الأحداث؟ هذا هو موضوع رواية "لعنة زحل" للكاتب الإنكليزي بريستلي، التي يمكن قراءتها كرواية بوليسية مشوقة، كما يمكن قراءتها على أكثر من صعيد، والرجوع إليها أكثر من مرة"، حسب قول جاك برجييه، من جماعة "بلانيت" الذائعة الصيت.
