تبحث المحاولات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب في إشكالية مركزية تتعلق بكيفيات استيعاب الخطاب العربي المعاصر لمنظومة الحداثة السياسية الليبرالية. وهي لا تهتم بالتأريخ لهذه الإشكالية بقدر ما تحاول التفكير النقدي في عوائقها وصعوباتها التاريخية والنظرية، وذلك من خلال مقاربة بعض مفاهيمها، وبعض الأسئلة التي تولدت عنها في الخطاب السياسي العربي المعاصر، وكذلك عبر الإمساك بكثير من القضايا التي ترتبط بالحداثة السياسية كما ترتبط بالموقف من التراث والظاهرة التراثية، وذلك في سياق ملابسات الصراع الآنية في الأيديولوجيا العربية المعاصرة.
يواكب التفكير في هذه الإشكالية، دفاع متواصل عن قيم الحداثة السياسية، ولا يكون هذا الدفاع دائماً إيجابياً، بل إنه يتجه في كثير من الأحيان لمحاصرة بعض المظاهر التي تتجاوز المنظور الإنساني المحدد لخلفية تأسيس هذه الحداثة. ومعنى ذلك أن هذا الدفاع ينطلق من نظرة خاصة، تعتبر أن هذه الأخيرة، مجرد مشروع منفتح، أي مجرد مشروع لا يفتأ يؤسس ذاته، ويعيد تأسيس ذاته، في علاقته بصيرورة تاريخية الذاتي، وفي علاقته أيضاً بصيرورة الخصوصيات التاريخية للآخر، هنا وهناك. لقد اكتفى مثقفوا عصر النهضة المتغربون والتغريبيون بالدفاع عن قيم الحداثة الغربية كما هي، واعتبروا أن النهوض العربي مرهون بتعلم دروس هذه الحداثة، ونسخ تجاربها كما هي، أي دون أدنى فحص ولا مراجعة لهذه الدروس، أو لأسسها المعرفية والسياسية والأخلاقية، ونتج عن ذلك محاولات في صياغة نماذج إصلاحية تقليدية ومقلدة، رغم دفاعها المستميت عن الحداثة والتحديث.
أما سؤال الحداثة الذي يحاول المؤلف هنا إعادة صياغة بعض جوانبه وأبعاده، فلا يكتفي بالنظر إلى النموذج السياسي الحداثي، باعتباره وصفة علاجية، قادرة على التغلب على علل المجتمع العربي، وإخفاقاته، بل ينظر إلى هذا النموذج كاختيار تاريخي في طور التأسيس وإعادة التأسيس، كمشروع منفتح لا يفتأ يؤسس ذاته ويعيد تأسيسها.
