في هذا الكتاب لامية في التصريف والخط والنحو والعروض والقوافي والمعاني والبيان والبديع وتسمى الجمع، وكفاية الغلام في إعراب الكلام وهي من نظم أبو سعيد زين الدين شعبان بن محمد بن علي القرشي الشافعي، الآثاري، الموصلي أصلاً ومولداً، المصري داراً ومدفناً. ولد الآثاري ليلة النصف من شعبان عام خمسة وستين وسبعمائة بمدينة الموصل، ولسنا نعرف عن حياته في الموصل، ولسنا نعرف عن حياته في الموصل شيئاً ولا من تاريخ رحلته إلى مصر، لكن يبدو أنه رحل إليها في سن مبكرة، وأخذ عن جلة من مشائحنها، وهم شيوخ كثار تنوعت معارفهم وعلت أقدارهم وتعددت اختصاصاتهم فكان فيهم الخطاط والنحوي والمحدث واللغوي والعروضي. وهذا ما جعل من الآثاري ملمّاً بجميع فنون المعرفة، فقد كان نحوياً ولغوياً وعروضياً وشاعراً وبلاغياً وخطاطاً. ولكنه تفرد بلون خاص في التآليف وهو كتابة الألفيان: فقد نظم ألفية في الخط، وألفية في النحو، وألفية في العروض، وهو أمر لا نجد له نظيراً عند كل المصنفين العرب والمسلمين. صحيح أن ابن مالك نظم ألفيه في النحو شرحها شرّاح كثيرون. وما زالت تدرس في الجامعات حتى اليوم إلا أنه لم يحاول نظم ألفية أخرى في متن آخر. وهكذا تأكد لنا تفرد الآثاري بهذا اللون من التأليف.
