الآثاري، ناظم هذه الألفية، شخصية عراقية فذة، كتب ونظم في شتى فنون المعرفة، حتى جاوزت مصنفاته الثلاثين عداً، فقد كان نحوياً ولغوياً وعروضياً وشاعراً وبلاغياً وخطاطاً. ومذهب الآثاري النحوي أنه بصري متشدد، وهو يعلن ذلك في الآراء التي أوردها في هذه الألفية، إذ كان متمسكاً بعوامل البصريين وعللهم. وإذا كان الآثاري قد نظم ألفيته على غرار ألفية ابن معط وألفية ابن مالك، إلا أنه كان أكثر تشدداً منهما فقد خالف ابن مالك في أمور وآراء أشار إليها المحقق في حواشي الكتاب.
وقد خالف الآثاري ابن مالك في تقسيم الموضوعات النحوية في ألفيته هذه. فقد قسمه إلى عشرة فصول. جعل الفصل الأول للاسم، تعريضه وصفاته وحالاته: أفراده وتثنيه، جمعه وتصغيره، صرفه وعدم صرفه، وجعل الفصل الثاني للفعل، تعريفه وعلاماته وأحكامه، والثالث للحرف، صنعته وأقسامه ووجوهه، والرابع للربع، تحدث فيه عن المرفوعات، الخامس للنصب، تحدث عن المنصوبات، وفي السادس تحدث عن المجرورات وفي السابع عن المجزومات وخصص الفصل الثامن للعام، ذكر فيه أقسام العوامل الاسمية والفعلية والحرفية، والتاسع للتوابع وخصص الفصل العاشر للحذف وأقسامه. ثم ذكر تركيب الجمل وما له محل من الأعراب أو ليس له محل منها، ثم ذكر ظواهر لغوية أخرى كالوقف والحكاية ومدة الإنكار ومدة التذكار. ونرى أن الآثاري قد استوفى ما في كتاب سيبويه من موضوعات وظواهر، إذ لم يذكر ابن مالك بعضها، كمدّة الإنكار ومدّة التذكار على سبيل المثال.
