يتضمن هذا الكتاب كل ما يحتاج إليه الباحث من خطوات تقوده إلى بلوغ ما يرمي إليه من المعرفة، وتحقيق ما يصبوا إليه من العلم.
فما هو البحث بحسب د. عاصي: "إنه التفتيش والتنقيب عن كل ما يتصل بالموضوع الذي يشكل غاية الباحث، على أن بلوغ ذلك الهدف بيسر وسهولة، (...) يتوقف على الطريق الذي يسلكه الباحث في عمله، والمنهج الذي يعتمده؛ وهنا تأتي أهمية المنهج والمنهجية، التي هي بمثابة الطريق الذي يسلكه الباحث (...)".
تأتي أهمية هذا العمل من كون مؤلفه قد وضع فيه خبرات سنوات من التدريس الجامعي إضافة إلى تضمينه أعمال الرعيل الأول والثاني، كذلك تعرَضه لقائمة من مصادر التراث العربي: مضمونها، مؤلفيها، والعصر الذي ظهرت فيه هذه المؤلفات، فضلاً عن إدراج نماذج مصورة من الخطوط والمخطوطات والفهارس والأشكال التي يحتاج إليها الطالب.
يأتي هذا الكتاب في ثلاثة أبواب: الباب الأول جاء بعنوان: "منهجية البحث والكتابة" ويتضمن تعريف بالبحث والباحث ومراحل إعداد البحث، أما الباب الثاني فجاء بعنوان "تحقيق النصوص والمخطوطات" وفيه يشير الكاتب إلى أهمية التراث وكيف تتم عملية التخريج والتعريف في الأبحاث، وكذلك علامات الترقيم والفهارس... إلخ. ثم الباب الثالث وفيه يستقي الكاتب "مصادر التراث العربي" من أمهات الكتب سواء في الأدب، أو التاريخ، واصطلاحات وعلوم أخرى ولا ينسى الكاتب أن يضمن كتابه هذا مصادر التراث العربي في اللغة، وفي ميادين أخرى مختلفة وآثار باقية عن القرون الخالية، وبهذا يكون هذا الكتاب شاملاً ووافياً لطلاب العلم والمعرفة لكونه يأخذ بيدهم ويعرف لهم الخطوات الواجب اتباعها منهَجياً، ويرسم لهم معالم الطريق، ليصل كل باحث إلى مبتغاه من دراسته أو بحثه...
