يبدو العام الأوّل من قرن جديد عاماً حافلاً بالبشائر دائماً؛ ولم يكن العام 1900 إستثناءً، فقد استقبله الأمريكيّون بشعار من ثلاث كلمات: سلم وإزدهار وتقدّم، وإذا كان ذروةَ إنجازاتٍ بارزة كثيرة، فقد تشوّفوا بثقة عظيمة إلى قرن من التقدّم المتواصل، القرن العشرون سيكون عصرَ المعرفة واليقين، إلّا أن ما يُثير السخرية أنه انتهى إلى اللّايقين والإلتباس والشكّ.
يروي هذا الكتاب قصّة ذلك التغيُّر وذاك التحوّل الكبير في التفكير الإنسانيّ، وفي وقتٍ قد لا تقدِّم الألفية الجديدة بعده يقيناً، فإنّ هذا الكتاب يُحاجج في أنها تحمل ممكنات جديدة للنمو والتغيّر والإستكشاف والإبداع في مناحي الحياة كافة.
في السابع من نيسان من العام 1900 خاطب اللورد كالفن Lord Kelvin، عالِم الفيزياء البارز ورئيس الجمعية الملكية في بريطانيا Britain's Royal Society، المؤسسةَ الملكية مشيراً إلى "جمال ووضوح النظرية الدينامية"؛ فأخيراً توسَّعت فيزياء نيوتن لتشمل الفيزياء كلّها، بما فيها الحرارة والضوء.
في الجوهر، كان كلّ ما تمكن معرفته قد عُرِف آنئذٍ من حيث المبدأ على الأقل؛ فأمكن لرئيس الجمعيّة أن يتطلّع إلى قرن جديد بإيمان كامل.
فقد كانت أجيال من العلماء صادقت على نظرية نيوتن في الحركة، كما أن هذه النظرية فسَّرتْ كلّ شيء، من مدارات الكواكب إلى أوقات المدّ والجزر إلى سقوط تفاحة ومسار قديفة.
يُضاف إلى ذلك أن جيمس كلارك ماكسويل James Clark Maxwell كان قد وضع خلال العقود السابقة نظرية نهائيّة في الضوء، وبدا أن النظريتين - نظرية نيوتن ونظرية ماكسويل - قادرتان، إن أُخذتا معاً، على تفسير كلّ الظواهر في العالَم الفيزيائي برمته.
