تبرز الدراسات الواردة في هذا الكتاب جوانب الخطاب النقدي الذي ترافق مع النشاط المسرحي العربي في مرحلة التسعينات حتى أوائل القرن الحالي، وتربطها بمرجعياتها الإجتماعية والثقافية، وهي تتناول موضوعات العروض، وتيمات الدراما المسرحية التي كتبها المؤلفون المسرحيون العرب، في محاولة للإجتهاد، من خلال الإنفتاح الفكري والفني، لفهم أسباب ظواهر ثقافية، وفهم التحولات التي حصلت للنص المسرحي، أو العمل المسرحي، أو الجمهور.
إن المرحلة التي نتناولها هي مرحلة إنتقال من المسرح ببنيته التقليدية، إلى المسرح ببنيته الحديثة، أو ما بعد الحداثية، وهو ما يحتاج إلى مواكبة التطور الذي يطرأ على بنية النص، وبنية العرض المسرحي، وأداء الممثل...
يحاول هذا الكتاب من خلال قراءة الخطاب النقدي المسرحي، وقراءة عدد من العروض والأعمال المسرحية أن يقدّم صورة عن مرحلة مهمة من حياة المسرح العربي، وأن يسهم في تطوير التجربة النقدية وصياغة مصطلحاتها الحديثة.
