هذا الكتاب محاولة جديدة في تقديم المسرح العربي، كان دافعها في الأصل تعريف الجمهور الكبير بالمسرح العربي بأسلوب مسرحي أُعدّ أصلاً للتلفزيون.
لهذا السبب يتميز كتابي ليس في إكتشاف بعض النصوص المسرحية المهملة، خاصة في فترة ما قبل الحرب العالمية الأولى، وإنما أيضاً، وقبل كل شيء في التقديم الحي لهذا التاريخ.
ولقد عنيت أن يكون جهدي في الكشف والإختيار والتبويب هو عملي النقدي الأول، لقد عملت على غربلة هذا النتاج الضخم في مئة سنة وجعله رواية حية على لسان أبطاله أنفسهم، أي الخلاقين من مؤلفين ومن مخرجين وممثلين، وأيضاً النقاد الذين عاصروهم، أو تأخروا عنهم.
لكن فوجئت أنا به، وما سيفاجأ به القارئ أيضاً أن هذا المسرح حتى فترة الإستقلالات للأقطار العربية المختلفة التي بدأت مع نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى، كان مسرحاً لبنانياً؛ أو الأصح كان مسرح اللبنانيين في مختلف الأقطار العربية.
