بين مدينتَي الإسكندرية وحيفا في مطلع القرن العشرين، تدور أحداث الرواية التي تمتزج فيها بمهارة الوقائع التاريخية المتعلّقة بنشأة البهائية، وما واجهته من صعوبات، مع المخيّلة الخصبة للكاتب الذي ينحو بها في كلّ مفصل، في إتجاهات غير متوقعة.
وفي خضم المغامرة التي لا تغفل عن إلقاء الضوء على الظروف التي ولدت فيها في بلاد فارس، وما تعرّض له مؤسّسوها، يقدِّم الراوي صورة عن معتقدات البهائيين ونظرتهم إلى الدين والإنسان، وعلاقاتهم بالأديان الأخرى ونظرتهم إليها.
تعالج الرواية أيضاً إشكالية تحديد الأولوية بين الشكل والجوهر وما ينجم عنها من تداعيات تلامس الحتمية في المجتمعات العربية التي غالباً ما ترجّح الشكل، وتمضي في الدفاع عنه، مهما كانت الكلفة والوسيلة.
"السفينة الحمراء رحلة في بحور البهائية" هي الرواية الثالثة التي تصدرها دار سائر المشرق للكاتب السينمائي سمير زكي بعد "رجل ضد الله" سنة 2014 و"البنك العثماني" 2016، وفيها يتابع معالجته لقضايا حسّاسة ومثيرة، يفضل كثيرون لو تبقى طيّ الكتمان.
